If we had a rupee for each time our grandparents have tell us that we’re wasting money on commercial products and that all our skin problems can be solved with a few herbs- we’d be rich. If we’d listened to them, we’d have great skin. With all commercial products differing no more than with a few products and failing to deliver on their promises- we’re stumped for a solution to our skin woes. With concrete jungles replacing real ones, we often don’t find know which herbs to look for, where to find them, and which are even good for us.
Recognising this need, Sonia Gaikwad launched Pratha Naturals. An elegant yet traditional brand that doesn’t use chemicals like – preservatives, surfactants, alcohol, artificial colorants, scents and animal fat in any of its products. Their products and hair oils are handmade with completely natural ingredients. While we tried out their product range, we made a note of all the important ingredients in them, and which ones are great for our skin. Here’s what we found.
1. Olive Oil
That bottle you bought as a vow to be more healthy, does more than just keep you fit. The vitamin E in the oil helps eliminate dandruff. It keeps your cuticles supple and growing. But the oil works best for sensitive skin, relieving rashes, inflammation and irritation. It also grabs on to other oil-based products and isn’t comedogenic- making it great as a makeup remover and cleanser. Needless to say it’s got great moisturising properties as well. Try an olive-oil based soap to reap these benefits and ditch that chemical based bar of soap.
2. Green Tea
Another product that’s probably been lying on your kitchen shelf that’s great for your skin. You’re probably already aware of the antioxidant properties of green tea, but did you know they’re great for your skin even if you don’t actually consume them? Best for dry, chapped lips, green tea also has antibacterial and anti inflammatory properties that protect your lips from a host of skin troubles. If you can’t go through the trouble of brewing some each time your lips are suffering, try a green tea based lip balm.
Called the ‘botox plant’ in skin circles, this one’s got a reputation for increasing skin elasticity and decreasing age-lines, wrinkles and more on one’s skin. It does this by inhibiting elastase, an enzyme that breaks down skin’s elastin. It is also rich in antioxidants. Due to the exfoliating effect of organic acids found in the plant- read, citric and malic- it helps speed up cell turnover. This results in more even looking skin tone as well. It is also naturally high in mucilage content (a sticky substance found in plants that helps with the storage of water and food) which makes for a great skin moisturiser, especially for sensitive skin. Try hibiscus in a scrub once or twice a week to reap these benefits.
You probably saw this one coming, but we’ve been so excited by its benefits that we simply had to include them here. Neem is great to get rid of acne, acne scars, pigmentation, blackheads, skin blemishes, and signs of ageing. It’s also great for dry skin and cures dark circles. Enough said! Whatever form you choose to use it in, our take is a neem face pack every week, however often for glowing skin.
Another one that’s highly recommended by the older generation, rose has excellent emollient properties which moisturises dry skin. It also has antiseptic and astringent properties that treats acne. The anti-inflammatory properties in it helps treat redness and inflammation. It inhibits pigmentation which helps with age spots. Natural astringent that it is, it helps tighten pores as well. It also helps soothe and calm one’s mind. All of these benefits in mind, we suggest trying a bath salt with rose in it.
